Dairy & Egg: what's safe, what isn't.
Two of the classic food allergens β and dairy carries a second problem: many dogs are lactose-intolerant, so 'reaction' isn't always allergy.
- Cow's milkCommon allergen
Many dogs are lactose-intolerant, and some are truly allergic to milk proteins.
- Egg (esp. the white)Common allergen
A recognised allergen for some dogs; egg white is the usual culprit.
- CheeseCan trigger
High in fat and lactose β tiny amounts only, skip for sensitive dogs.
- Plain yogurtCan trigger
Some dogs tolerate the live cultures; others get loose stool.
- Butter & creamCan trigger
Almost pure fat β risks stomach upset and pancreatitis, no real benefit.
- Cottage cheeseCan trigger
Lower in lactose; sometimes used in bland diets, but not all dogs tolerate it.
- Ice creamCan trigger
Sugar plus lactose makes it a poor choice β skip it.
