Additives & Extras: what's safe, what isn't.

The 'little extras' derail more trials than dog food does — table scraps, flavoured meds, and one treat too many. Several common pantry items are also outright toxic.

  • Xylitol (sweetener)Never feed

In sugar-free gum, some peanut butters and baked goods — causes a blood-sugar crash and liver failure.

  • ChocolateNever feed

Theobromine is toxic to dogs; darker chocolate is worse.

  • Macadamia nutsNever feed

Cause weakness, tremors and vomiting — even just a few.

  • Caffeine & alcoholNever feed

Both are dangerous to dogs — keep them well out of reach.

  • NutmegNever feed

Contains myristicin — larger amounts cause tremors and seizures.

  • Blue cheeseNever feed

Mould-ripened cheeses (blue, Roquefort) contain roquefortine — can trigger tremors.

  • Artificial colours & preservativesCan trigger

Some dogs are sensitive; limited-ingredient foods leave them out.

  • Salt & seasoningsCan trigger

Skip salty, spiced or fatty human leftovers.

  • Plain peanut butterUsually safe

A great treat — but ONLY if it's verified xylitol-free.

  • CoconutUsually safe

Small amounts of flesh or oil are fine; a lot causes loose stool.

Running a trial?
